Living in a cold, unsafe, power guzzling rental home – Kate knows what it’s like all too well…

We started renting a two-bedroom terrace in Collingwood. It was so cold, the first thing we did was hang up a huge curtain to insulate the floor-to-ceiling windows in our lounge room – to stop the cold coming in.

Kate feels lucky to have a place to rent. She doesn’t want to rock the boat with the landlord.

Plenty of Australian renters live in worse conditions that put lives at risk. Let’s do something about it today!

Returning to an in-person format for the first time since the pandemic, Sustainable House Day on Sunday 21 April had all the ingredients for a cracker day out: passionate homeowners, valuable lessons on minimising household energy, an engaged community asking great questions about construction and design, and the opportunity to have a good old peek into someone else’s thoughtfully conceived home. Over 100 homes swung open their doors for punters to get a look inside, plus many more sharing video tours online. Nearly 4,000 people got on board for an in-person tour, with representation in every state and territory across the country.
