BRAZIL: NGOs highlight threats to quilombolas
On 16 May Brazilian NGO Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) and human rights group Coordenação Nacional de Articulação das Comunidades Negras Rurais Quilombolas (Conaq) released a report showing that nearly all of Brazil’s quilombola communities, Afro-Brazilian descendants of escaped slaves who founded rural settlements, were facing threats such as environmental degradation.
